The significant changes from January 2021 include a new points-based system under which every migrant entering the UK will need to secure 70 points through the skilled worker route.

It is imperative that employers also observe these changes and adapt to the new immigration policies.

Any employer in the UK running any small, medium, or large organization needs to issue a certificate of sponsorship(CoS) to all the skilled professionals when hiring for their business. The new immigration policy makes it clear that from January 2021 onwards.

How do employers sponsor a worker?

To sponsor any skilled worker or eligible professional, the employer must provide a Certificate of Sponsorship(CoS) to the worker to complete the immigration process smoothly. Besides, employers must bear immigration skill charges and fees to assign sponsorship certificates.

However, peculiar measures to sharply focus before issuing CoS are:

  1. The skilled worker is eligible to work for you
  2. The worker visa comes under the skilled worker visa route
  3. Ensuring that you can pay the worker
  4. Checking the eligibility to become a sponsor

What are sponsorship management roles?

The process involved in the sponsor license process can be detailed and requires follow-ups. It is wise to appoint a person who can manage the application process.

The primary mechanism used is the Sponsorship Management System(SMS)

Sponsorship role

  1. The appointed person or an authorizing officer needs to be qualified.
  2. Key contact: a person who will directly be communicating with UKVI
  3. Level1 user and optional level2 user: those who will use the SMS for license

The employer can also hire a professional representative or expert immigration lawyers.

Salary requirements for skilled worker visa

The skilled worker is usually paid at least £25,600 per year or £10.10 per hourly basis. If the ‘going rate’ for the job is higher than both of these, the employer will generally pay you at least the going rate.

A ‘shortage occupation’ is a skilled job where there is a shortage of skilled workers in the UK. There is an extensive list of all shortage occupations furnished by the UK government for sponsor licence holders to hire overseas skilled workers and staff.

If any job is listed on the shortage occupation list,

  • You will be paid 80% of the usual going rate for your job
